Yomi Land of the Dead

Directed by - Joe Crisp

“A lone Ronin awakes in a land unfamiliar to him.”

Yomi was the first project I worked on as a dedicated cinematographer, as well as my first film shot while studying at university. The experience became a defining step in shaping my understanding of cinematography — teaching me the importance of deliberate visual choices, strong references, and how composition and pacing can support a story. Shot in black and white on a DSLR, the film embraced a restrained visual style, with predominantly static camerawork designed to reflect the stillness and contemplation at the heart of the narrative. Visually, we drew inspiration from the work of Akira Kurosawa and the discipline of his samurai films. While I’ve grown significantly as a cinematographer since making Yomi, the film remains an important reminder of how far I’ve come and the foundations that continue to influence my work today.
